Statement in Commemoration of Human Rights Day, December 10

Respect for human rights, democracy, and people’s right to a government that is responsive to their needs are values that have formed the basis of U.S. engagement in South Sudan for decades, since long before this country’s independence. In recognition of Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we reaffirm our belief that respect for human rights is essential for the peaceful and successful future that the South Sudanese people deserve.
